The NWNL Fusion Reactor Operations Training Summer Camp equips students to understand and run a nuclear fusion reactor.  This includes NRC & OSHA regulatory and compliance training as well as fusion reactor physics and control systems.

Students will certify in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1096 Radiation Safety Training as well as study portions of the DOE fundamentals handbook.  In addition, curriculum from Fermilab, the NRC, and the IAEA is also provided.

Students practice running the reactor in teams by protocol and perform simulations while responding to various reactor control contingencies. They will earn their RED BADGE and NWNL Reactor Tech Level 2 Certification which qualifies them to interview for volunteer intern positions at NWNL in their year around research programs.  These volunteer internships significantly enhance college applications and allow students to experience real nuclear research in a “post-doc” setting.

40 Hours over 2 weeks

The summer camp is available to high school sophomore through seniors and runs Monday through Friday for two weeks. It begins at 10:00 AM and goes until 3:00 PM. Lunch is from noon to 1:00 PM and students should bring a sack lunch. Free soft drinks and bottled water will be provided. The cost of the two-week course is $1,000.00, and there are only 40 seats provided between June and August so register early.  Class size is 4 students maximum, and registrations are available at www.NWNLabs.org on the “About” pull down menu.
